It was coincidence that had both Brynjolf and Sapphire set to go to Solitude, and one that the Nord wasn't entirely dreading. His fellow thief was a trustworthy partner and a good woman, and she wasn't disagreeable company- and yet he still found himself troubled over this new contract.
He'd been surprised to hear that none other than Ulfric Stormcloak, Jarl of Windhelm and leader of the rebellion, was requesting work from the Thieves Guild. He must have been getting desperate, to risk having to work with an elf (for the guild frequently employed them), but it had been even more surprising when Mercer had informed Brynjolf that Sapphire was going to work on this job.
Apparently the Jarl had asked for her personally.
Why? How did he know her that well? Vex or Delvin had more of a reputation than Sapphire, and some of the others were just as well known. So why her? It put Brynjolf at ill-ease, especially when it forced him to consider the fact that he didn't know as much about his underlings as maybe he should have. Sure, her free time was her free time, but it was never safe to have such unknowns in their midst. This Nord liked to know who he was working with, and Mercer was already suspicious of Sapphire.
So maybe he could use this joint venture to the nation's capital to his advantage.
"So, lass." He began on their third night out, poking at their fire with a stick. "How long have you known the Jarl of Windhelm?"
Might as well be blunt about it.
